DARK AGAINST SOPA/PIPA
_________________________
NotForPublicConsumption.tumblr.com is joining in the global internet strike against SOPA/PIPA—what many see as invasive government censorship. “Also joining in the protest are Wikipedia, Reddit, RawStory, NaturalNews and thousands of other websites. They are all going “dark” for 12 - 24 hours.”*
“SOPA and PIPA are proposed laws that would give the U.S. government the right to turn off any websites it wants by claiming their users link to copyrighted material.”* In other words, under this law, if any posts or re-blogs contain an excerpt or link to a photograph, copyrighted news article, op/ed piece, or song, for example, the government would have the right to not only shut down this blog and others, but could potentially seize the entire tumblr website which would be held accountable for the content of its users.
More importantly, if SOPA passes, many alternative sources of information and news such as “InfoWars, Wikipedia, RawStory, Reddit, YouTube, Facebook, NaturalNews, and thousands of other websites could be shut down.”*

Internet companies ratcheted up their fight against anti-piracy bills in Congress on Wednesday by hauling out the most potent weapon in their digital arsenal: They blacked out thousands of their own websites.
The English version of Wikipedia went offline at midnight. Blogging software Wordpress “censored” items on its home page, while Craigslist hit visitors with a call to action. Google stayed open for search, but covered the company logo with a giant black box…
Organizers hope the coordinated protest — and the deluge of angry calls expected to follow — will cause members of Congress to think long and hard about their support for the Stop Online Piracy Act in the House or the Protect IP Act in the Senate.
Participating Wednesday are thousands of websites representing a broad swath of the Web community — from popular video games like Minecraft, to sites such as Failblog, not to mention individual Facebook pages and blogs.
